Bypass Surgery

Bypass surgery is an open surgery method which is necessary if minimally invasive methods are not possible. The concept is to bypass the blocked portion of the artery with a segment of a healthy vessel. Patients who undergo bypass surgery need general anesthesia. First, the surgeon secures a piece of a healthy vessel from elsewhere in the patient’s body. This portion of healthy vessel is called the graft. Afterwards, the surgeon accesses the affected artery and links one end of the graft to a healthy vessel section above, and the other end to the vessel below the narrowing. Blood flow is now rerouted, improving the supply of oxygen in the area.
